If you’re struggling, this is the place for you.
I’ve lived in many places and seen first-hand how the LGBTQ+ community struggles with identity, anxiety, depression, and the expectations of those around them.
Fear of rejection, the pain of bullying, the absolute terror of being too much or not enough, the dread of not being seen, heard, and appreciated…
We often bring these injuries into adult interactions without knowing they still linger beneath the surface.
I designed this practice to be a haven for you.
It’s where you can be accepted and get to know yourself while healing your painful past and designing your happiest future.
We’ll work to decrease the pain, anxiety, and tension to feel whole, valid, and okay just where you are today… all while cultivating joy and learning how to pursue the interests that make you feel good here and now.
Being your full and authentic self is a revolution requiring compassion and courage.
If you’re looking to work with a therapist who will see you for who you truly are, accept you unconditionally, and help you to learn about yourself, I am the therapist for you.
If you want to feel connected and guided in the safety of your own home, this is the place to start.
So… what will our therapy sessions look like?
Foremost, I am interested in hearing your story – from what you did this weekend to your favorite activities in elementary school. I love to hear about your experiences in this world: the good, the bad, and the in-between.
I want to know what makes you tick!
This provides you with the space to explore. We will often discover together how your experiences have shaped you into who you are now. And we might also find that some of those experiences have “imprinted,” leaving a larger mark than you realize. It’s common to have mixed feelings about what has happened in your life…
And I am here to help you sort through those feelings.
This brings us to a special kind of therapy we’ll use…
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) will help you work through those imprints, making them feel less heated – less “itchy” or “drastic.”
EMDR can help you gain perspective – to see things more objectively by removing the emotional toll of those painful incidents in your past.
After these sessions, many clients report feeling a newfound peace of mind. They can reflect on painful memories without the overwhelm, activation, and shame.
This can significantly affect how you react to situations that “trigger” these feelings. It’s much easier to change our behavior when the choice is about behavior and not about a subconscious pattern that has been ignited without even realizing it.
But we’ll do more than eliminate negative triggers.
We’ll explore how joy enters your life and how you can cultivate happiness. I love this part!
Yes, we will do the hard work, but we will also explore the fun side of things.
Throughout my life, I have been a cheerleader, a mom, and a therapist (Do you see a theme here?). I like to be on the journey with others, and I would love to help you find what brings you peace and joy and make it part of your daily life.
I am a fan of inner-child work. I have found that many of us carry pain from childhood and adolescence into adulthood. Those wounds are difficult to heal, but I believe healing can happen… and happen for you.
We can go in many different directions. It’s not all about EMDR.
I draw from many forms of counseling.
Plus, I’m not the ultimate decision-maker on what we’ll do in therapy. You know the inner working of your life much better than I do.
We’ll stay open, so if we need to change focus, we can. We might focus on trauma one day, but you might want to spend the next session focusing on cultivating friendships. You might dedicate one week to learning how to communicate your needs better… and the next to bringing comfort to your inner child.
I remind myself daily that these are YOUR sessions, and you are “steering the boat.”
My job is to guide you through your healing, but you are the author of your story, which goes double in therapy. You will lead, and I will follow. I may have suggestions from time to time, but you should always feel in charge of the direction we are heading.
I work collaboratively with you to decide what we are doing, how we are doing it, and, most importantly, when we are doing it.
Working together online…
Online therapy is more accessible, comfortable, and likely to fit your hectic schedule. And, best of all…
Research shows that it’s just as effective as traditional, in-person therapy.
And it’s certainly more convenient. It gives you a greater area to expand your search (think of the entire state rather than within a half-hour drive). In addition, you can explore uncomfortable topics from the safety of your own space, with access to your comfort items. It also has the bonus of bringing your pets into your coping plans!
About Me
Hi! I’m Angela, owner and therapist at Black Lotus Counseling.
I have worked in various positions within the mental health field for about 20 years, including inpatient psychiatric care, crisis management, youth behavioral therapy, and a DBT program. I have run several programs within my community and have helped to train and educate the community and first responders in matters relating to mental health. I have also worked as an educator at the college level, teaching human services, psychology, sociology, and criminology classes.
I hold a Bachelor’s degree from Alvernia University and a Master’s from Walden University.
Currently, I am one class away from becoming a certified yoga instructor and often incorporate theories and practices of yoga into my work as a therapist.
I was trained in DBT by Training Implementation Collaborative in 2017, and I trained in EMDR with EMDR consulting in 2021. Learning to incorporate skills training and the use of DBT helped me help my clients develop more adaptive ways of handling stressors. Learning about EMDR and how to incorporate it into my practice was like coming home. It felt like the missing piece of the puzzle and propelled me into a deeper and often rewarding experience as a therapist. It has helped me to help others make great progress in less time and made profound differences in thinking, feeling, and behaving for many of my clients.
I have trained in or studied various other forms of therapy that I incorporate into my personal counseling style, including positive psychology, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Brief Solution-Focused Therapy, and Internal Family Systems Therapy. I draw from these modalities as I need to for each client to ensure you are getting the most from your sessions.
Outside of work…
I often travel. I love a good road trip and am usually searching for some sort of adventure.
I live in rural Pennsylvania, on the Philly side, an hour or two north of the city. I have four cats, and you’ll probably meet at least one of them as they love hanging out in my office with me.
I’m an avid reader, mostly dystopian themes or horror novels. I also love a good movie. I’m kind of nerdy, so sci-fi references are welcome.
If you want to know more about me, there are some get-to-know-you questions on the FAQ page. I encourage you to give them a look… or call me!
