FAQ

Where are you located?
Black Lotus Counseling is a virtual practice for residents throughout Pennsylvania. This means we can meet almost anywhere online or by phone – you get to choose!
What is the best way to get in touch with you?

You can call or text me at (484) 599-2640. I typically return calls within 24 hours.

Email is also acceptable: angelakellercounseling@gmail.com.

What is a free consultation?

The free consultation is a 15-20 minute appointment where we can discuss my approach and how it could apply to your current struggles.

This is a chance for us to see if we are a good fit for one another.

How do I know if you are the right counselor for me?
We’ll get a feel for each other during your free consultation. If you are looking for something specific, I am open to an email discussion where you explain what you are looking for, and I can let you know if it’s within my scope of practice.
What are your office hours?
I am available weekdays between 9 AM and 4 PM.
How long is a typical session?

Typically, a session is 50 minutes.

You can request a longer session, though – I just need notice first.

What is your cancellation policy?

Cancellations must be made at least 24 hours before the scheduled appointment to avoid being charged.

You’re welcome to reschedule within the week if needed. Scheduling is flexible (within reason).

How do I pay?

You can pay securely through either Simple Practice or Ivy Pay.

I am open to other payment methods upon request.

What is a “Superbill”?

A Superbill is a bill from me that you can submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement or application to your deductible.

Are you licensed?
Yes, I am licensed in Pennsylvania and Nevada.
With whom do you work?
Black Lotus Counseling works with adults (ages 18-65).
How long can I expect to be in therapy?

The therapeutic process varies greatly, and the duration of therapy depends on your personal goals.

We will work together to determine the length of time best for you.

What is your style of counseling?

I am a very warm and affirming counselor.

I also firmly believe you are driving the boat: You lead, and I follow. There are times when things need to be structured, but I am always open to going with the flow based on what life throws at you that week.

Do you prescribe medications?
Unfortunately, therapists do not prescribe medication, but I would be happy to help you find a psychiatrist in your area.
Am I allowed to ask you personal questions?

I am fairly open, so you can ask me anything.

If I think a question is too personal, we can discuss why that is.

Is it okay if I cry in a session?
I encourage it! There is no shame in this game. We are talking about some of the most deeply personal and difficult things you may have experienced, so if a cry is coming, I want you to allow it openly.
What do I need to know to do therapy remotely (online or by phone)?

Openness

Therapy works best when you are absolutely open and honest.

Privacy

Being alone in a comfortable private space is best. If we’re meeting online, the platform is HIPAA compliant (which means your data is safe in an online world!).

Location

You can meet almost anywhere that’s comfortable and private, BUT NOT DRIVING! If you are in your vehicle for a session, it must be off.

Requirements

A reliable Internet connection (Wi-Fi) is best, although data on a cell phone can work. I’ll email you a link the morning of our session, and you’ll be good to go!

Do you offer groups? Should I try one?
I do offer groups. Groups are a wonderful way to grow and learn from others who have been in similar circumstances. Some groups are more educational and can be a great place to pick up new skills.
Cats or dogs?
Both are good.
What is your favorite way to spend your off time?
I love to read and travel, so maybe reading a great novel in a setting that I have never experienced before. That would be ideal!
What was your favorite age growing up?
Seven. My aunt was my second-grade teacher, and I felt really supported and cared for in her class. I also moved up to big-kid books and started reading short novels that year, which was exciting.
What is your ultimate travel goal?

Italy. Venice, to be exact, but I would love to see all of Italy. It just seems so unique.

What types of books, movies, or TV do you like?
That’s a tough question because my interests vary from day to day. Generally, I like science fiction, horror, and comedy.
What activity is immediately calming to you?
Petting a cat or hanging out with one of my children or grandchildren.
What is your favorite season, and why?
Fall. I’m a Halloween person.
What is your favorite part of a workday?
Well, with what I do, breakthroughs are common. The best part of a day is the moment when something clicks for someone, and I get to watch things change inside of them. It’s truly exhilarating!
How do you transition from work to home each day?
I often use a meditation where I pack my day into a suitcase and put it on the conveyor belt at the airport. As I watch it go under the little opening, I allow myself to breathe in the end of one task and the beginning of another. Sometimes,

I will follow this up with progressive muscle relaxation.

How do you deal with work stress?

I promised myself I wouldn’t recommend coping strategies I haven’t used myself.

I utilize daily gratitude exercises, purposeful appreciation techniques, mindful meditation, intention-setting, and yoga as my go-to practices each day.

In moments of distress, I use square breathing, polyvagal resets, progressive muscle relaxation, and pranayama techniques if I have time and space.
