Therapy for LGBTQ+ Community Members

The daily struggles that impact our mental health…

Members of the LGBTQ+ community are twice as likely to experience mental health struggles than their counterparts, which skyrockets to four times as likely among the trans community.

LGBTQ+ identified people are twice as likely to have struggled with suicidal ideation than heterosexual identified people.

Evidence also indicates that members of our community experience higher rates of anxiety and depression, and LGBTQ+ youth are twice as likely to experience persistent feelings of sadness and hopelessness.

Many LGBTQ+ youth struggle with homelessness, and people within our community are more likely to have faced homelessness within their lifespan.

LGBTQ+ adults report daily struggles with microaggressions, discrimination, prejudice, and the denial of civil and human rights.

LGBTQ+ adults also experience rejection from family members or being harassed or bullied in school due to their sexual orientation. They are twice as likely to struggle with addiction and substance use disorders.

The most frequently reported issue among the community when entering into therapy is a lack of cultural competence on the part of the clinicians.

Black Lotus Counseling is committed to bringing the highest level of services to a community in need – complete with cultural competence, lack of judgment, and understanding of the unique challenge that living in a cis-mono-hetero-normative culture may add, on top of the issues that have brought you to seek therapy.

Working with an affirming professional is more important than ever.

As our existence as queer people becomes politicized, and our rights hang by a thread, it is important to recognize the subtleties of how these impact your life and what has brought you into therapy.

Microaggressions, making our private lives a public conversation topic, the expectation to explain things that we can’t explain (or desire to explain) ourselves…

These are just a few of the stressors that affect our community, and how they affect us should be taken into account by our mental health professionals. And while these issues may not be what’s bringing you to Black Lotus, it is important to recognize that they are like tabs open and running in the background. They may or may not be traumatizing for you, but they are present in all we do. It can feel overwhelming to face your life’s struggles with these other stressors at play.

At Black Lotus Counseling, we are experienced in living these daily truths and have integrated this knowledge into all we do.

Breaking barriers and living as your full, authentic self…

It’s about more than what we wear or how we conduct ourselves in some circles.

I’m here to create a safe space where you can explore who you are while tackling the concepts that have brought you into therapy.

An affirming space is judgment free. It is also one that validates who you are at your core.

You are more than your sexual orientation. You are more than your struggles, and you are more than your job or your status in your family.

Creating a space where you can explore who you are beneath the many layers is how we will find and process the beneath-the-surface thinking that impacts your daily living.

Discover and embrace your authentic self.
